The vineyards turn copper and gold, the high peaks of the Stellenbosch and Helderberg ranges get their first dusting of snow, and the cellars warm up with woodsmoke and the smell of long, unhurried lunches. It's a different season entirely — quieter, more intimate, and, for many of our returning guests, the time of year they like the Winelands best. Golf is, of course, one of the main reasons people choose to stay at [Winelands Golf Lodges](/). But for mixed groups — couples, families, friends where only some of the party play — the question that comes up most often is: _what do the non-golfers do?_ The honest answer is that they have an equally compelling itinerary. Here's how we'd suggest spending a Stellenbosch winter when you're not on the course. ## Wine Tastings by the Fire The Stellenbosch Wine Route has more than 200 estates, and a good number of them lean into winter properly — tastings move into the cellars, fires get lit, and the pace drops to match the season. Because winter is genuinely off-peak, you'll find more personal attention, fewer crowds, and tasting rooms that feel almost private. Guests staying with us receive a complimentary wine tasting at **Kleine Zalze**, the cellar on our estate. It's a perfect place to start — five minutes from your front door, no driving required, and one of the most awarded producers in the country. From there, a handful of nearby estates are well worth a winter morning or afternoon: - **Rust en Vrede** — one of South Africa's most celebrated red wine producers, with a beautiful historic cellar and a fireplace built for winter. - **Tokara** — set high on the Helshoogte Pass with sweeping views across the valley, exceptional wines, and one of the best restaurants in the area for a long lunch. - **Waterford Estate** — known for its wine-and-chocolate pairings and a relaxed, unhurried tasting experience. ## Stellenbosch Town — Galleries, Museums & Coffee Stellenbosch is South Africa's second-oldest town, and you feel it the moment you walk the oak-lined streets. Whitewashed Cape Dutch gables, museum-quality historic homes, art galleries tucked into 18th-century buildings, and a coffee culture that rivals any city in the country. The **Village Museum** on Ryneveld Street is the obvious starting point — four restored period homes spanning two centuries of Cape architecture, walked at your own pace. From there, head down **Dorp Street** for the best of the town's galleries and antique shops, and stop at one of the many cafés along Church Street or Bird Street for what is, genuinely, some of the finest coffee in the country. It's a ten-minute drive from De Zalze Estate, and an easy half-day in town — particularly enjoyable on a cool, clear winter morning. ## Scenic Winter Drives Through the Winelands Winter is the best time of year for a long, slow drive through the Cape. The light is lower, the mountains often carry mist or snow, and the vineyards run through every shade of copper, ochre and burnt red. There's nowhere quite like it. Three drives are especially worth setting aside a morning for: - **The Helshoogte Pass** — connecting Stellenbosch to Franschhoek over the mountains, with farmstall stops at Boschendal and Tokara along the way. - **The Franschhoek Pass** — beyond the village, climbing into the mountains with dramatic valley views and very little traffic in winter. - **The R44 coastal route** — south from the estate towards Strand and on around the coast; ocean on one side, mountains on the other. ## Spa Days at De Zalze Guests staying at Winelands Golf Lodges have access to the on-site **Wellness Spa by Camelot**, just a short walk from the lodges. The beaches at Strand and Gordon's Bay are 20 to 25 minutes from the estate — a long, easy stretch of sand at Strand, and a working harbour with a handful of relaxed seafood restaurants at Gordon's Bay. Push a little further south on the R44 coastal route and the scenery becomes properly dramatic: cliffs and crashing surf through Rooiels, the whale-watching coast at Betty's Bay, and the penguin colony at Stony Point. It makes a perfect half-day excursion between a morning wine tasting and an afternoon back on the estate — or, in winter, between rounds for the golfers in the group. ## Fireside Evenings on the Estate Winter evenings on the estate are, quietly, the part of the stay most guests remember best. A braai on the lodge patio with the fireplace going inside. A bottle of whatever you bought at that morning's tasting. The pace dropping noticeably as the sun goes down behind the Helderberg. If you'd rather not cook, [De Kombuis](/restaurants) on the estate is a five-minute walk from the lodges and does honest, generous Cape food in a warm, relaxed dining room.
