Working Remotely From The Winelands: Long Stays In Stellenbosch

More people now take their work with them. A week or a month in the Winelands, working normal hours from a quiet lodge, can be more productive than the office. It can also be more restful than a holiday you spend checking email.

A long working stay needs different things from a weekend away, though. This guide covers what to look for in long-stay accommodation in Stellenbosch, using the self-catering lodges on De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate as the example.

What Makes A Lodge Work For Remote Work

A holiday lodge has to be comfortable. A working lodge also has to be dependable from Monday to Friday. Three things matter most.

A Desk And Wi-Fi In Every Lodge

Working from a dining table for a weekend is fine. Working from one for three weeks is not. Every lodge at Winelands Golf Lodges lists a desk among its in-room amenities, and high-speed Wi-Fi is included at no extra charge.

If your work depends on video calls, tell our reservations team when you book. They can advise on the lodges best suited to it.

Backup Power: Check For An Inverter

Many of our lodges list an inverter among their key features, which keeps essentials running during a power interruption. Lodge 29, our Executive 1-Bed with solar backup, was built with this in mind, and Lodge 27 is a three-bedroom option with solar.

Each lodge page shows its key features, so check for the inverter before you book rather than assuming it.

    Separate Space To Switch Off

When you live and work in one room, the working day never quite ends. A two-bedroom lodge lets you turn the second bedroom into an office and close the door at five.

If two of you are working, it also means two calls can happen at once.

Choosing A Lodge For A Longer Stay

For one person or a couple, a one-bedroom lodge is usually enough. Ground-floor lodges with a private patio give you somewhere to take a break outside between calls. Lodges 37 and 38 both note a quiet, tranquil patio.

Think about the season too. Lodge 40 has underfloor heating and a large balcony with mountain views, which suits a winter stay. Lodge 29 has a tree-shaded patio that stays pleasant in summer.

Every lodge is self-catering, with a full kitchen and, at most lodges, a braai on the patio. Over a long stay, cooking for yourself is what makes the place feel like home rather than a hotel room. Our page on self-catering lodges in Stellenbosch lists what each lodge includes.

    Setting Up Your Workspace

A good working stay starts on day one with ten minutes of setting up. Choose your spot at the desk, check the Wi-Fi before your first call, and find a corner with good light and a plain background for video.

Every lodge also has a sitting area and a dining table, and most have a patio or balcony. Over a few weeks, moving between them helps. You might take the morning's focused work at the desk, the afternoon's reading at the table and calls that don't need a screen outside.

Air conditioning comes as standard in nearly every lodge, which matters through a Stellenbosch summer when the afternoons get hot. In winter, a lodge with a fireplace makes the end of the working day feel like the start of the evening.

What To Bring For A Working Stay

The lodges cover the basics of daily life, but a few things make a long working stay smoother:

    • A laptop stand and a separate keyboard, if you use them at home.
    • Headphones with a microphone, for calls while others are in the lodge.
    • A power bank for your phone.
    • Your own coffee, if you're particular about it. Tea and coffee facilities are provided in every lodge.

Groceries are easy: Stellenbosch's supermarkets are about 3 km from the estate.

    Housekeeping On A Long Stay

Housekeeping is included. Every lodge receives a daily refresh clean, and longer stays get a full clean with fresh linen every seven days.

That rhythm suits a working stay. The lodge stays tidy without anyone coming in for an hour every morning while you're on a call. If you need a particular time for housekeeping, mention it to the team on arrival.

A Weekday Routine On The Estate

The advantage of staying on De Zalze Winelands Golf Estate is what's on hand once the laptop closes. A typical working day might look like this:

    • Start with a bucket of balls at the driving range before the first call.
    • Work through the morning at the lodge desk.
    • Take lunch outside on the patio, or at the Halfway House, open 07:30 to 15:30 daily.
    • Swim at the estate pool or book a treatment at CSpa in the late afternoon.
    • Walk to dinner at De Kombuis, Lievens or the Sunset Terrace.

Lodge guests receive discounted Pro-Shop rates on tee times at the golf club, so a Friday afternoon round is an easy end to the week. Every stay also includes a complimentary wine tasting at Kleine Zalze on the estate.

    Staying Well Over Several Weeks

The risk of a long working stay is that you work the same hours as at home and see little of where you are. Building the estate into the week stops that happening.

The landscaped gardens and walking routes on the estate make an easy morning or lunchtime walk. The pool works for a swim before dinner, and CSpa's treatment menu, from massage to facials, is a short walk from the lodges. On weekends, the Jonkershoek and Simonsberg nature reserves have trails for a proper day outdoors. More than 200 wine estates are spread through the surrounding valleys.

It helps to plan one thing to look forward to each week. That might be a round of golf, a long lunch on a wine farm or dinner at De Kombuis. It keeps a working month from blurring into one long week.

Getting Around: Town, Airport And Meetings

Stellenbosch town centre is about 3 km away, with supermarkets, coffee shops and restaurants. Cape Town International Airport is roughly 33 km, around 20 minutes by car, and Cape Town city centre is about 45 minutes.

That makes the estate a practical base if you need to be in the city for meetings once or twice a week. If your team wants to meet in person, the estate has a conference facility for up to 15 guests. It pairs well with lodges booked for the same group.

We have written separately about short business trips from De Zalze. This post is about stays measured in weeks rather than nights.

When To Plan A Long Stay

Stellenbosch has a Mediterranean climate, and golf is playable all year. Summer, from November to March, is the busiest season. April, May, September and October are quieter, with cooler days and often better availability.

Minimum-stay rules can apply over peak season and event periods. For a long stay, it's worth talking to reservations early about the dates you have in mind.
