How to Plan a Golf Group Trip to Stellenbosch: Lodges, Tee Times & Everything You Need to Know

A golf group trip to Stellenbosch is, pound for pound, one of the best-value, highest-quality golf experiences in South Africa. A championship course in the top 25 nationally, premium self-catering lodges a short walk from the first tee, world-class wine and food on the doorstep, and Cape Town International Airport only 35 minutes away.

But it does need a bit of planning to get right — particularly around lodge selection, tee time availability, and how to keep mixed groups happy when not everyone in the party plays. This guide covers everything we'd suggest organising before you arrive.

Choosing the Right Lodge for Your Group

Winelands Golf Lodges offers 1- to 4-bedroom lodges, all sitting directly on the De Zalze Estate, all within a short walk of the clubhouse and pro shop.

For most golf groups of four to eight, the 3-bedroom and 4-bedroom lodges are by far the most popular. They give you multiple en-suite bedrooms (so nobody is sharing), a generous open-plan kitchen and lounge for the post-round debrief, and large patios with built-in braais for sundowners and dinner outside. The result is a setup with both shared social space and real privacy — the difference between a holiday and just sharing a hotel corridor.

For larger groups of ten or more, the easiest format is two or more lodges side by side. Everyone shares the same estate facilities — the pool, the spa, the restaurants, the golf course — but each group still has their own front door to come back to. Our reservations team can hold adjacent lodges where availability allows.

Booking Tee Times at De Zalze

De Zalze Golf Course is currently ranked in the top four in the Western Cape and the top 25 in South Africa. It's a Peter Matkovich design routed through mature oaks, vineyards, and the Eerste River, with the Helderberg framing every shot back towards the clubhouse. It is, by some distance, the reason most golf groups choose Stellenbosch over any other Cape destination.

Lodge guests receive preferential Pro-Shop rates on green fees, and we'd strongly recommend booking your tee times in advance — particularly for fourballs and any group of more than four players. Weekend tee sheets in peak season fill up early, and you don't want to land in Stellenbosch having to play split tee times around lunch.

The simplest way to coordinate it: book your lodge through us and ask the reservations team to assist with tee times at the same time. We'll line up the round, the cart, and any extras (caddies, lessons, equipment hire) alongside your accommodation.

    What to Book in Advance

A short, practical checklist of what to lock in before you arrive:

    • Lodge accommodation — booking directly with us saves an additional 5% versus third-party booking sites. Use the booking page or contact reservations for a tailored group quote.
    • Tee times — confirm dates and the number of players as early as possible, especially for weekend rounds and peak season.
    • Spa appointments — for non-golfers (and for golfers who fancy a deep-tissue after 18 holes). The on-site Wellness Spa by Camelot books up on busy weekends.
    • Restaurant reservations — book De Kombuis on the estate for at least one or two evenings, particularly for larger groups.
    • Minimum stay — most lodges have a 2-night minimum (3 nights over peak weekends). Plan dates with this in mind.

If your trip falls between May and August, ask about our Winter Special — lodge stay, breakfast, and a round of golf or a R600 spa voucher per person per night, often the best-value package of the year for groups.

Catering for Mixed Groups — Golfers and Non-Golfers

This is, quietly, one of Stellenbosch's strongest selling points for group trips. The non-golfers in the party don't have to invent ways to fill the day — there's genuinely too much to do.

While the golfers are out on the course, the rest of the group can enjoy a complimentary wine tasting at Kleine Zalze on the estate, an afternoon at the Wellness Spa by Camelot, lazy hours at the communal pool, or a drive into Stellenbosch town for the galleries, restaurants and wine route beyond. There's a full experience guide to what's nearby, and the on-estate facilities alone are enough to fill two or three days.

Everyone reconvenes back at the lodge in the late afternoon for sundowners on the patio, dinner on the estate or a braai outside, and the slow business of comparing scorecards versus what the non-golfers found that day. Mixed groups consistently tell us it's the easiest trip they've done together.

How the Direct Booking Discount Works

Guests who enquire or book directly via winelandsgolflodges.com receive an additional 5% discount compared to the rates published on third-party booking sites. On a single night that's a nice-to-have; across a four-night group stay in two or three lodges, it adds up to a meaningful saving — often enough to cover an extra round of golf or a dinner on the estate.

For group bookings, the easiest path is to contact our reservations team directly. We'll put together a personalised quote covering accommodation across the lodges you need, tee times, spa, and any restaurant reservations, with the direct-booking discount applied across the whole stay.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum stay for group bookings at Winelands Golf Lodges?

Most of our lodges have a 2-night minimum, extending to 3 nights over weekends and peak season. For larger group bookings across multiple lodges, our reservations team can advise on the best dates and confirm minimum-stay requirements at the time of quoting.

Can we book multiple lodges for a large group?

Yes — groups of 10 or more typically take two or more lodges side by side on the estate. Everyone shares access to the same facilities (pool, spa, restaurants, golf course) while still having their own private lodge to come back to. Email or call our reservations team and we'll hold adjacent lodges where possible.

Do lodge guests get discounted golf rates at De Zalze?

Yes. Lodge guests receive preferential Pro-Shop rates on green fees at De Zalze. We strongly recommend booking tee times in advance, especially for fourballs and group bookings — our reservations team can coordinate tee times alongside your accommodation.

Is Stellenbosch suitable for a mixed group where not everyone golfs?

It's arguably the strongest reason to choose Stellenbosch. Non-golfers have a complimentary tasting at Kleine Zalze on the estate, the on-site Wellness Spa by Camelot, the communal pool, and the wine route, galleries and restaurants of Stellenbosch town ten minutes away. Mixed groups consistently report it as the easiest trip to keep everyone happy.
